The exhibit “Reflections: The Art of George Rodrigue” is now on view at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum. Organized by the George Rodrique Life & Legacy Foundation, the exhibit travels far beyond the artist’s iconic Blue Dog to explore his connection to Louisiana’s culture, landscapes, and heritage. A new group show opens September 2 with a free 6 p.m. reception at the Baton Rouge Gallery Center for Contemporary Art. A talk with the artists – Alex Podesta, Matt Morris, Pippin Frisbie Calder, and David Horton, is scheduled for 4 p.m. September 6. More here.

The Old Governor’s Mansion at 502 North Boulevard will be the setting for the free event “Fall Into History,” scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. September 6. Attendees will find exhibitions, food trucks, and activities for all ages. Mansion tours with docents will be offered, and rare artifacts will be on view. This year’s event also features the participation of the West Baton Rouge Museum, LSU Libraries Special Collections, and the Baton Rouge African American Museum. More here.
Opening September 17 at the LSU Museum of Art, the exhibition “The South’s Most Elusive Artist: Walter Inglis Anderson.” The exhibit, which will remain on view through January 3, features more than 40 works by Anderson, and is organized by the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The exhibit will open with an evening of programming, including a members-only reception at 5 p.m., then a 6 p.m. screening of the documentary Walter Anderson: The Extraordinary Life and Art of the Islander, followed by a panel discussion. The LSU Rural Life Museum will host an event on September 19 and 20 marking the 247th anniversary of the Siege of Fort New Richmond, prosecuted by Bernardo de Galvez against British-held Baton Rouge in 1779. On the agenda: battle reenactments, Revolutionary-era music and dance, open-hearth cooking, colonial games, and living history demonstrations. In a related note for those interested in pregaming in anticipation of the siege anniversary, the museum will host a free virtual gathering at 6 tonight (September 2) with Frances Kolb Turnbell, author of Spanish Louisiana: Contest for Borderlands, 1763 – 1803.
